My Dad the WWII Vet

So, I finally started Dad's blog. He has been working tirelessly on his memoirs of his time in the Navy and that prompted me to merge the scrapbook I made him a while back with his narratives.

I am also taking over webmastering a site that uses WordPress, so I used that to figure out the lay of the land. It seems that the HTML is locked down for free users??

So I picked what looked like a good theme... the graphic on the sidebar appears to be flowers. Sigh. OK so I'm going with it and seeing it as a subtle juxtaposition to the war stories.

Dad has been typing up his articles and sending them off to family and friends. It's not easy for him. He's 90 and has had to learn Windows 2010, not to mention he only has one hand that works and that's his left hand. But he plugs away at it and keeps learning what the computer can do. Very proud of him for his never say die attitude as well as his war exploits. His site is www.ltjgwwii.wordpress.com

A Walk in the Woods

There is an aspen grove that was blogged about off of 38 that I wanted to see. It was out of our way and our maps were at the "beach house." Instead we took a nice walk in our local woods at the end of Yosemite. Fall color was waning but there was enough for me to take a bunch of pictures. My SO and Guinness walked ahead and I was to meet them. There's only one road/trail. By the time I had finished messing with my camera they were out of sight, which didn't worry me because, there's only one way to go, until you get to the fork in the road. I went the way they didn't and wound up by the water tower that I thought they were walking to then started back after calling my SO and telling him what I was doing. He didn't have his phone on him. grrrr.

Long story short I walked waaaay too far and missed the little trail back to the street, which doesn't look like a trail at all. I knew I had walked too far when I could see Sugarloaf. At that point I tried my GPS which told me I was not close enough to a road to enable the GPS. Got some nice pictures though. My SO called me after he had gone home to get his phone and I turned around and walked back. I will not be so oblivious to landmarks in the future.

So we both got more excercise than we bargained for. Just think I almost walked to Big Bear City from Moonridge! It would be fun if I'd planned on it, and had a map maybe.

Flower Mart Outing

My friend is having her second annual flower mart outing on Saturday. Last year it was lots of fun, but I was overwhelmed. The Los Angeles Flower Mart is a huge and wonderful place. Just the orchids alone were amazing.

They even had teencie weencie pineapples to put in a tropical arrangement.

Last year I tried my best and did a tropical arrangement, had to use those pineapples. Everyone else really knew what they were doing, while I just jammed flowers in a vase. Cute flowers, but I felt unworthy.

Anyhoo, this year I'm actually planning what I'm doing. First I consulted my friend Martha Stewart to get some ideas, and how tos. She showed an arrangement with hydrangeas and roses for a wedding centerpiece that I loved.

Second I scrounged for my own vases, and baskets and stuff to use. Tables and supplies are supplied at this event, but last year I needed more vases than I had, plus I had no idea what I was doing.

And last but not least I've got a recipient for the flowers. My BFF has had a rough summer and needs roses, stat. She also does her own spectacular arrangements, so I don't want to be shamed when I present her with my creation. I don't want to see her wince.

Scrapbook Express

I have realized that I'm about 8 years behind in my scrapbooking. It's not like I have kids I need to get on the page. Why am I printing my pictures and pasting them into a book when all of my photos are digital?

Shutterfly is coming to my rescue. I'm uploading and printing the books by year. This year I've got lots of little 7x9 books so they'll just go into my album. Wonder if I'll have any 2 page spreads at all? It will even be fun to do a page (or two) of photos from Facebook. Kind of a year in review. It's just little mundane bits and pieces of life but those are memories too.

Update:
Just got my first books. Resolution is not good, but then again, my photos weren't great. One book was taken entirely from Facebook photos copied from friends. I'm going to try Snapfish, the company that Pioneer Woman uses. We'll see if there's a difference.

Shutterfly - A Boon to Mankind

I scrapbook. I am way behind with my projects. Recently I decided to try going digital on a project for my nephew's high school graduation. My sister lives 4 hours from me so it's not easy getting together to share pictures on a project. Shutterfly, Inkubook, How Time Flies and Snapfish all allow you to create bound albums. Since just a traditional album averages around $20 and stickers, paper and stuff can add up to around $10 for a two page spread I figured a $50 digital album would actually be saving money. Most of my pictures since 2002 are digital so it's easy to get them uploaded. My sister uploaded her pictures and I was ready to start.

I wound up picking Shutterfly and picked a 12x12 custom album. The layouts vary from one picture that takes up the entire page to a collage of around 8 pictures. When you upload an album they automatically put a 7x9 book together and let you preview. These are pictures from one of those albums. I didn't have to do anything but upload and change the background design. These little books look great. All you have to do is drag a photo from the bottom photo strip and drop it in place to make changes and it's easy to change the layout. If you want to get fancy you can do a scrapbook page with Photoshop and upload that as a full page. I broke down and bought Memory Makers software to help me with that. Haven't tried it out yet.

Maybe I'll buy a regular photo album for this year and stick a bunch of these little $12.00 Shutterfly books in it!

Deep Snow

All I could see was deep snow last Thursday morning. How cool to wake up to a different landscape than the one you went to sleep with. It was so beautiful I went out and took a picture of everything, from the fence post to the log pile! I'm sure my neighbors thought I was crazy. In Boston, where throwing trash from the car window was standard practice, the snow covered the trash and made it look like Disneyland. Snow makes everything beautiful.

It was at this point that I realized that walking in 2 feet of snow was an athletic event. It was also at this point that I was thankful for the loan of some toasty warm used men's snow boots. I learned that screen doors are stupid in winter cabins and that dirt shovels are really really heavy when they are full of snow.

The snow just kept on comin' Thursday and Friday. By Friday I had given up on shoveling the decks and just watched the snow fall. The kitchen deck was inaccessable because the screen door

wouldn't open. I had propped the back screen door open but because of the drifts couldn't get out that way. It was Friday that I gave up on clearing off the hot tub. Again, neighbors thought I was crazy enough.

Power was off and on, mostly on, for which I was very very thankful. I had two alternate sources of heat, the fireplace and a very efficient kerosene heater that I had been given instructions on how to use. There was an oil lantern I had to resort only once for light as well as a couple of flashlights. The stove is gas but since I had matches I could light it easily so I could cook with no electricity. I'm sure I would have realized I needed something I didn't have if the power had been off for any length of time. One thing I think I'll invest in is a power unit to charge the cell phone without electricity. Electricity and phones were out for some people in Big Bear for long stretches of time. Our area was one of the lucky ones. My little mountain adventure would not have been nearly as fun huddled next to the kerosene heater or even trying to get warm by the picturesque fireplace.

Storm's a Comin'

I woke up last Tuesday to the thud of snowballs being blown off of the trees by the howling wind. That wind can really screech through the trees at the top of the hill. So much for watching the snow fall gently and accumulate on the branches. There were times when I went out that I thought I might get blown over. I had visions of tethering the dog on a leash and having her blow over my head like a balloon. Snow was falling horizontally at this point. Tuesday was disgusting and miserable.

Wednesday dawned clear but I knew the big snow was on its way.

My camera was getting a workout and I was too – actually using the plastic snow shovel that came with the house. I guess that’s good for an inch or two of fluffy stuff but not whatever it was that was attached to my decks. I also learned that the lawn edger that also came with the house can substitute for a real ice chopper thingy and works pretty well. Oh, and I remembered that shovels are heavy. I don’t like shoveling. Never had to do it in Boston. This was not a good sign.
